questions and answers

What people ask first.

Short answers about what Provenboard does, what it asks of you and where your designs live. Anything missing, ask [email protected].

The product

What does Provenboard make?

The files a factory needs to build your board: gerbers, a parts list (BOM) and a placement file (CPL) for JLCPCB, checked against the factory’s own rules for your layer count. Along the way it picks the parts, writes the schematic, and places and routes the board.

Do I need to know how to design a PCB?

No. Everything is written for a smart newcomer: each question comes with two or three whole options, one recommended, and the trade-off in plain words. If you do design boards, the exact values and their sources are one click away.

How does it decide that a board passes?

It doesn’t. The agent builds; separate checks it cannot write to or overrule decide. Some questions only a person can answer, such as whether the pin map is right. Those wait for your sign-off.

Where do the parts come from?

Only from verified sources: a part with an LCSC number in JLCPCB’s catalogue, or a generic passive. Footprints are never hand-drawn and pinouts are never guessed.

Can I see why a part was chosen?

Yes. Click any part, value, placement or rule and you see why it is there, with its source: a datasheet section, the brief, a checkpoint or your own words. The record is append-only.

Access

Which computers does it run on?

macOS and Windows. Linux comes later.

Do I need to install anything else?

No. atopile, KiCad, Freerouting and a JLCPCB parts catalogue ship inside the app, ready on first launch. What ships, and at which version, is at the end of this page.

Where do my designs go?

They stay on your computer, in folders you own. This website stores your account and nothing about your designs.

How do I get access?

Make an account and confirm your email. You join the early-access list, and we email you when your invite is ready.

Working with it

What do I have to do?

Make the decisions. A project moves through eight steps, and five of them end at a checkpoint where you choose: requirements, architecture, parts and supply, the pre-fabrication review and the fab order. You also pick how much the agent does on its own.

How much does the agent do on its own?

You choose, and can change it at any time. Suggest proposes every change, and nothing lands until you accept it. Step finishes one step, then waits for you. Gated, the default, works freely between checkpoints and stops at each one. Full runs all the way to the factory files. At every level, ordering is yours.

Can I change things by hand?

Yes. Pause the agent and edit; what you changed becomes a lock it must work around. You can route any connection by hand, or keep all the signal routing for yourself.

Does Provenboard order the boards?

Never. It hands you the factory files and you upload them to JLCPCB yourself, when you are ready. That holds even at Full autonomy.

Which factories does it support?

JLCPCB today. The parts catalogue, the design rules and the factory files are all JLCPCB’s.

Can I open my project in KiCad?

Yes. Every project is a folder of plain files in a git repository: the source, the KiCad board, the brief, the decision record and the factory files. Leave with the folder and you lose nothing.

inside the app

Everything it needs ships with the app. Ready on first launch.

  • A real parts catalogue. About 586,000 JLCPCB parts ship inside, so every part it picks is one the factory sells.

  • Nothing to install. atopile, KiCad and Freerouting ship inside the app.

  • Plain files in git. Every project is a folder you own: brief, source, board, record and factory files. Leave with it and lose nothing.

What should the board do?

Early access for macOS and Windows. Tell us where to send the invite.
